Annunciation
You all upright in heart rejoice! - be glad!
The Lenten season is not glum nor sad,
It’s interspersed with many a joyous feast;
Below here find their very shortest list:
St. Patrick’s day, oh merriment and cheer!
And two days later comes St. Joseph dear,
Who earned for spouse ad child the daily bread,
With which the Holy Family was fed.
And last,- March twenty-fifth, - the visit paid
By Gabriel, Archangel to a maid,
Announcing her a birth and greeting “Hail!
Hail to you highly favored Holy Grail!”
A nine-months wait, and then what boundless joy!
This dreary earth will have a baby boy;-
Roll on poor world, roll on with hope renewed
In Mary's womb is ripening your food.
Thus Lenten fasts ad feasts collaborate,
And balance well and twine and alternate,
As it befits the struggling souls that strive
And thirst and hunger for eternal life.
