Love yourself deeply my dear friends I pray
So that your fellowmen ask in Bombay
and Washington - whence comes this soothing light?-
It shines so bright, yet does not proselyte.?
Love yourselves first, and be not bluff and gruff
Against your own flesh for you cannot love
Nor quench your fellows' yearnings, nor his thirst,
Unless you truly love yourself the first!
How can a man his neighbor fully serve
Without a sparkle in himself, nor verve--
Deprived himself of light how can he show
The candle that for neighbors ought to glow?
God's love enfolds all peoples of the earth;
And every soul is such infinite worth
But He alone determines the degree
perceived, -as it befits - - the entity.
As cherished children of the Lord on high
You have no reason to be coy and shy
To truly love yourselves with fervency
And your dear neighbor in the same degree;
Not more, -- this would be boastful vanity!
Infringement on divine priority;
Dispensing bountifully from above
As font, as source and wellspring of all love.
