there’s something about rattling a codfish on the line
the slip of silver glinting
winking in the light
a gaff and a net
ham and cheeze sandwiches
and an icebox of beer
it’s cool out here on the water
breeze and salty knees
seals cruising by
looking for heads
and eagles with their eagle eye
my momma taught me how to bait a hook
the bright red of tube worms, and the black
hearts of mussels beneath my shoe
the proper rhythm for a jig
the proper arm for a cast
a fisherman’s knot
and how to work a barb
from a sunfish’s eye
This summer was a doozy
my hair blonded
my sweat
salt crystals
next time I’ll bring a bottle ‘o tequila
and a lime
and have me some shots one for one
with the mer-king
I caught my biggest yarn this year’uh
twice the size of my digny
and wider than my pole is long
she took me for a wild ride
dragged the bow real low
in the watah
tore me reef asunder
cut up on barnacles and left to dry
man you shoulda seen her
a beaut
she had more scars on her whiskered lips
than a fifty cent prostitute
and she was crying my name.
At night
I hear her legend whispered on the tide
and with the first light
I can see her cutting figure-eights through
the bay
That saucy finner
she’s awaiting for me.
Well alright.
Lets get a-to it.
Rattle that there codfish on the line!
