Teachers Day
***************
As you know "Teachers Day" is observed in different countries on different dates. In my country it is today 5th September
The birthdate, [5 September 1888], of the second President of India, academic philosopher Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. It is considered a "celebration" day, where teachers and students report to school as usual but the usual activities and classes are replaced by activities of celebration, thanks and remembrance. At some schools on this day, the responsibility of teaching is taken up by the senior students to show appreciation for their teachers.
In Karnataka State, this day is called as "Shikshakara Dinacharane" in Kannada.
In Andhra Pradesh state, this day is called as "Guru Pujothsavam" in Telugu.
in Tamil Nadu State, this day is called "Aasiriyar dhinam" which literally means Teachers day in Tamil.
Another day set aside for commemorating teachers in India and Nepal is Guru Purnima, also called 'Ashad sukla purnima'. It typically falls in mid-July.
As of today I am not permitted to join any Teachers Day celebration in any school because I am not a V.I.P. or for that matter not even an I.P. The first teacher whom I don't recollect taught me to cry Next came my dearest mother who knew my baby language and helped improvise it to suit the world around me.I was taught to crawl and then wobbled and fell and learnt how to walk on two legs.I wonder who really taught me that.Instinct I think.
At home my mother taught me how to communicate in verbal language. She taught me to learn Bengali Nursery Rhymes & later on the alphabets. She read aloud from picture story books- the tales of bygone years -Bengali Fairy Tales which I still read and enjoy My dear father seated me on a tiny tricycle and taught me to how to get the contraption moving. So happy I was !!!! He sat on the bare floor and we played carrom together for long hours.True happy times Still in a dreamy world of my own I was bundled off to a school to be taught by highly educated teachers the ocean-deep realm of study books. Some of these teachers are etched in my waking mind. They taught me how to wake up and play the game of reading and writing for marks and grades. But let me tell you it wasn't fun at all at that time
Sports , games ,drama, debates, picnics, et al were real life teachers in group activity and honing of interpersonal skills. Some of my old classmates have excelled in sports and almost all of them have grown to be productive citizens some even featuring in "who's who". College and university taught me how to cope with freedom and groom for a rewarding career. I was not at all successful and probably chose the wrong job But I earned enough to feed and clothe myself and my family. Deaths in the family left me devastated specially after the last one in May 2000.Deaths of loved ones have taught me how to cope and manage grief without getting shattered and opt out of the mainstream of living .
As of today I am still being taught by the greatest teacher of all "Time" and the written texts by renowned gurus of Literature, religion, spirituality and philosophy. I do believe that books and other writings are the best teachers for a literate.Even a skimpy paperback depicting a love story has something to teach.Maybe one word or one sentence in the book may be nice to store. Mother Nature's Books are open and free for all to read and decipher which are even for the most illiterate who don't even know the alphabet . It's an ocean out there
I shall end with three words "Ignorance is bliss"
