My Cat Minky.
My cat is in trouble again it was in the garden that this happened. A mother hen with chicks was pecking away looking for things to eat. The chicks fascinated my cat Minky as they watched the mother hen scratching the ground. She was a good mother and she found lots of nourishing food for herself and the chicks. Minky got a little too close to the chicks and the mother hen attacked her. With wings spread wide apart she ran at Minky and using her feet and her beak soon had Minky retiring to a safer place. I was sitting or half lying in my hammock that I had tied to two trees. Minky sprang onto the hammock and complained as only cats can to me about the hen.
The next adventure was when Fred and Mabel my two black birds that really belong to the house and garden were attacked once again by Minky. Minky had no chance for instead of trying to catch one bird she tried to get both at once. The powerful dive at the two birds caused them to fly off and Minky landed rather heavily on all four paws. The look of amazement on Minkies face was something to see. It is a pity that I did not have my camera with me it would have made a picture that would I am sure won first prize at a photo competition.
My wife came home with the shopping this was always a big event for Minky. A shopping bag held so many secrets and smelled good. My wide started to empty the shopping bag and each object that she took from the bag was inspected by Minky. If it was something to her taste she had the habit of rubbing herself against the package. This time my wife had brought a chicken home for our Sunday dinner. Putting the chicken in to the refrigerator my wife closed the fridge door and got on with cooking the dinner. Minky was at the refrigerator and I do not know how she managed to open the fridge door. I looked to see what the noise was about and there was Minky rubbing herself against the hen. How she managed to get into the fridge remains a mystery to this very day.
Later in the afternoon we were in the garden when a mother hedgehog with five hedgehog babies slowly came to the birds bath to drink. This was for Minky something completely new she walked over to inspect the Hedgehogs. My wife and I noticed that as soon as she was close to the hedgehog mother it was as if a small black cloud passed from the hedgehogs over to the cat. We did not think much of this and it was not until we were back indoors that we saw what the small black cloud was. Minky was full of fleas. The first thing was a bath. Minky was bathed at least once a month and she loved the hairdryer that my wife used to dry the cat’s thick fur after her bath.
To say that Minky was spoiled would be an understatement of course she was spoiled my wife and I had no children. She was spoiled but very intelligent and independent. One night she came into the bedroom and jumped up and down on the bed until I just had to get out of bed to see what was causing her to act so strangely. In the house all was quiet but as I went onto the balcony I saw two men trying to break into the house opposite. I switched the light on in the balcony and watched the two men running off into the night. Since this episode Minky came and slept between my feet very warm on a cold winters night. Minky was eighteen and a half years old when she died. My wife and I were upset at our loss. We never got another cat but still feed the odd stray that visits us occasionally. Bern
