Two Birds.
Two birds are playing feint attacks with me as the target. In my back garden they eat from my bird foods that I put out for all of the birds. I must say I have become used to them flying from bush to bush and tree to tree. I asked myself would I miss them if they were to fly away to some other spot. Yes I suppose I would miss them. I have become so used to them the two black birds a male and a female. I have now given them a name each. Fred and Mabel. It is Fred that does his little dives at me as if he is trying to tell me that all of the space in my garden is for him and his Mabel. I wonder sometimes are they trying to scare me out of my own garden.
For two whole days now the pair of them have been very busy building a nest in the hedge that runs down one side of the garden. Not to disturb them I have taken to using a powerful pair of binoculars to observe the pair of them. It is surprising what they find not only in my garden but also in the woods. Soon a respectable nest was finished. They had pulled feathers from their own chests to lone the nest. Now it is Fred that I see flying around catching insects and taking them to the nest. Mabel only comes out of the nest for short periods.
One day Mabel came out of the nest and Fred took her place. I was now very nosey has Mabel laid some eggs will there soon be small blackbirds chirping away in my garden. Now both are busy flying to and from the nest, as they approach it they stop and look all around. If there is no danger they make their way through the hedgerow to the nest beaks full of insects for the fledglings in the nest. I am now impatient to see how many new young birds are in the nest but I hold myself back I do not want to disturb them. A few weeks went by with me still observing the black birds.
I have a birdbath in my garden and I fill it with fresh water twice a day. Many different birds use the birdbath not only to quench their thirst but also to have a bath. It is very amusing to watch them. Now a new guest has appeared in my garden a mother Hedgehog with five baby Hedgehogs trailing behind her. They make their way to the birdbath and drink from the fresh water. After drinking I watch them disappear in the direction of my compost heap. I am sure the mother Hedgehog has nest somewhere under the compost.
Fred and Mabel have brought their young out into the open. I have spent many a happy hour watching the young attempting to fly. Their parents encourage them on each attempt. First one then the next until all could fly it was not long before all of the young birds had flown away leaving just Fred and Mabel. The nest is still in the hedgerow where it will stay until next year. Fred and Mabel have now accepted me and I can go around in my garden without their small attacks.
While digging my garden ready for the winter both Fred and Mabel are with me in fact they are not a bit shy. As I dig and turn the earth over worms appear only to be eaten by Fred and Mabel. They hop around my feet waiting for the fat juicy worms. Both Fred and Mabel stayed with me right through the winter months in the spring it started all over again their feint attacks rebuilding the old nest and the laying of eggs. I am I think a very lucky man to have such guests in staying in my garden. Bern
