Just Two Horses
Many years ago when Unicorns roamed the earth it was considered lucky to see such a magnificent animal. All Unicorns are white and look like a horse except for the horn in the middle of their foreheads. One day two men riding each a unicorn followed by six men riding black horses arrived in Fairyland. The men riding the unicorns were Gnomes. Loudly they demanded to see the Fairy Queen. The Gnome with the most to say shouted out that he had come to marry the Fairy Queen. The Fairies on hearing his words broke out into peals of laughter. This angered the Gnome and he swore that he would punish the Fairies. At his command the six men on the black horses took the bow from their shoulders fitting arrows to the bows they shot at the Fairies. Not one Fairy was hit by an arrow and the Gnome gave the command to fire the bows again and this time each arrow must hit a Fairy or the men on the black horses would be punished.
Once again the arrows flew through the air and again not a Fairy was hit. The loud-mouthed Gnome got into such a rage that he pulled his sword and charged at a group of Fairies that were laughing at him. The Fairies disappeared to reappear somewhere else laughing even harder. The Gnome did not realise that all Fairies in Fairyland were protected by magic it was impossible to hurt a Fairy. A bright blue flash and a small puff of smoke announced the arrival of the then Fairy Queen, Grandmother of today’s Fairy Queen. On seeing the two Gnomes on their unicorns her Majesty asked why attacks against the Fairies were taking place here in Fairyland.
The loud-mouthed Gnome repeated that he had come to take the Fairy Queen for his bride. Her Majesty smiled and said, “I am married to the King of all the Fairies. I cannot marry you.” The Gnome then shouted in a loud voice I am the king of Gnome land and I have come to take you with me. I can give you a castle, gold and jewels and all that your heart wants. Her Majesty looked hard at the loudmouthed gnome then she walked to where the two Unicorns with the Gnomes on their backs. Reaching up to the Unicorn that the loud-mouthed gnome was riding. She took the horn twisted it and the horn came away in her hand. She did the same with the other Unicorn. Now all of the Fairies were laughing out loud. Her Majesty spoke once again. “You have offered me a large castle, gold and jewels if I marry you and you have not even got a real Unicorn. Both of you are riding each a white horse is this the way to present yourself to a would be bride?” “I am now going to send you back to where you came from, take this message with you.” “A Fairy Queen can only marry a Fairy Prince. Learn how to behave with strangers one does not shoot bows and arrows at innocent Fairies or any one else if it come to that. Learn good manners and above all let a horse be a horse. Unicorns are free creatures with the wildness of spirit let them roam where they want to go and be happy for them.” Her Majesty waved her magic wand. The two Gnomes on their white horses and the six men on their black horses disappeared back to where they had come from. Peace has returned to Fairyland and all is well. Bern
