School Outing.
I have been asked to accompany the Fairy school children on a days outing in the countryside of Kent. I felt really pleased that I of all people had been chosen. The following morning I got up washed dressed and shaved had my breakfast and went quickly to the clearing by the old oak tree. I think that I was more excited than the Fairy children. Hand in hand the Fairies appeared accompanied by two of the Wise Old Fairies. We formed a circle and holding hands one of the Wise Old Fairies spoke a few words in the old fairy Language.
Once again the strange feeling that I get when travelling by magic told me that we were on our way to somewhere in the County of Kent. The day was warm and sunny and the journey by magic ended we were on the North Downs of Kent. The children were sent off to look for wild flowers. Each child was given the task of drawing and colouring his or her flower. Slowly the children came back to where I was standing with the Wise Old Fairies. Some of the flowers were beautifully drawn and coloured. One could see at a glance what wild flower the child had found and drawn.
Fairy cakes and goblets of refreshing drinks appeared out of nowhere and the children enjoyed their morning break. I went off to look for a flower that the Fairies had not found. I did not have to go far soon my nose smelt the sweet fragrance of the wild Honeysuckle. I drew and coloured my picture of the sweet smelling Honeysuckle and went back to the group of waiting Fairy Children. I must say I was thrilled when from a dozen or more young children my picture was recognised. Even the Wise Old Fairies congratulated me on my rendering of the Honeysuckle.
The next lesson the children were asked to do was to look for small insects such as beetles and anything that lived in the wilds. The Wise Old Fairies forbade them to look for bird’s nests just insects. This took longer that I thought it would after all on the Kentish Downs there are thousands of different insects flying or crawling around the Downs. Once again the Wise Old Fairies inspected pictures that had been coloured and I too looked and recognised many of the insects that the children had drawn and coloured. Once again it was my turn to find something that the children had not found.
I walked for a while with my eyes fixed to the ground. I saw many beetles and other insects but all had been found drawn and coloured by the children. Something made me look up and I saw a beautifully coloured butterfly. This I thought none of the children had seen this would be my picture. The butterfly settled on some Honeysuckle in the hedgerow and I quickly made a sketch. I had difficulties in colouring my sketch but at last I took my picture to show the Wise Old Fairies and the Children. It gave me a thrill as my coloured sketch was recognised. I did not know the name of the butterfly but the children and the Wise Old Fairies told me that it was an Admiral. Once again refreshments in the way of Fairy Cakes and goblets of nectar came again from nowhere and all ate and drank. It was time for us to return to Fairyland. Once again we all held hands and the feeling of travel by magic overcame me and we were once again back in the clearing by the old oak. The children walked back, hand in hand to the Fairy School and I returned home to my computer to two write this little story of our day out on the Kentish Downs. Bern
