No One Is Resposible.

No one is Responsible.

Fairies when they leave the Fairy School to take part in everyday matters such as colouring the flowers trees shrubs and whatever else needs colouring just go about what they have been taught in school. No one is in charge all know what is to be done and just do it. This has been part of Fairy life for many generations up until a few weeks ago all has gone well the Fairies worked well and no complaints were to be heard. Something must have gone wrong with the last batch of Fairies to leave school for their work was not of the best. Hardly anyone noticed until the berries and nuts ripened off ready for picking. Black berries just turned red and were not at all sweet certainly not good for jam making. The same with the strawberries those that grow wild in the woodlands just turned green and had no taste at all not to mention the elderberries it would be a bad wine making year with elderberries that were not ripe. Now complaints came flooding in from the birds that eat the berries. Later as the nuts should have ripened most of the nuts were black and foul inside. Not fit for the squirrels and other animals that relied on the nuts to take them through the winter.

The owl told me about the nuts and the acorns and I decided to find out what was wrong. Was it Mother Nature’s fault that things have gone wrong? I did not think so the weather has been normal for this time of the year not too much rain and plenty of sunshine things should have been normal with such good weather. I walked around Fairyland keeping my eyes wide open. Most of the newer Fairies that had just left the Fairy School spent most of their time playing; only occasional did one of them use their magic wand to colour the flowers. I called a meeting of the fairies in the clearing by the old oak.

The Fairies came and most wondered what I had called the meeting for. Fairies are naturally curious and listened as I told them about the ship-shod work that was being done. What about all of the animals and birds not to mention the insects especially the bees? Who would provide honey for the Fairy Cakes when little or no honey could be produced and the petals of the flowers were falling off because work was not being done, as it should be. One of the younger Fairies called out that they were not to blame they were not responsible for the slip-shod work after all they were still very young too young to be burdened with the work of keeping things in order. They wanted to play as well as work. I answered that all of the Fairies had been chosen for this very responsible work. All both young and old must pull their weight to keep things right every thing in the world depended on the work of the Fairies. Then I gave them the alternative to either work on their own or to do as it is done in the Human world. A group of say five Fairies under the control of one Fairy. All in charge would have the responsibility to see that the five Fairies under them did their work properly. There was a loud outcry from all of the Fairies. No we will do our work properly. We need no one to tell us what to do. I then suggested that all of the fairies in Fairyland would put things right by using their magic wands. Magic wands were taken and golden sparks flew in all directions.

The Fairies have learned their lesson and now things are back to normal. All work as they had been taught and the young Fairies have accepted responsibility. They now know that there is a time for playing and a time for working. I was able to make my blackberry jam a little late perhaps but the taste is excellent. The other berries nuts and fruits were also a little late but at least all were eatable and no bird animal or insect had to go hungry. Bern
