Dartford Heath and its Fairies.
I was about seventeen when I first noticed the little people that live on the Heath at Dartford in Kent. The sun shone down and I sat myself down under the boughs of an old oak tree. At first I thought to myself there are a lot of butterflies here on the Heath. Under the old oak there was a mass of roots, it was sometime during my nap that my body made itself comfortable. Something awoke me, some noise then I really opened my eyes for there they were Fairies just as I had heard about them, silvery wings flattering as they went from Flower to flower, bush to bush, each had a small wand in its right hand and from the wands came sparks and the flowers and bushes even the grass changed their colours. I kept quite still and watched as with their wands they caused mushrooms and toadstools to grow.
I left the Heath as it started to get dark the night’s darkness made all seem unreal, was that one of the Fairies? Then I saw a swarm of what looked like flying lights leading or shall I say lighting the way for this Fairy. Suddenly a swarm of the same lights was flying around my head these lights were actually leading me down a well-trodden path to a way from the Heath down to the town of Dartford. The lights from an auto caused the swarm to break up and fly off into different directions I could no longer see the Fairy that I had been following, the flying lights had also flown off in different directions. It was the first time that I had ever seen these flying bugs or as they are properly called Fireflies.
The following day I was up early and made my way to the clearing on Dartford Heath where the old oak tree with its comfortable roots stood. During the night the Fairies had been very busy for everywhere I looked were toadstools and mushroom rings. Then as I seated myself from above me I heard the call of an owl. The call I think was a signal for suddenly Fairies appeared from all around me. The owl hopped down from branch to branch until she was just perched on a branch above my head. Suddenly the owl spoke each word was clear. I am speaking to you for the Fairies have recognised you as a friend. Fairies came closer and closer, if I had wanted to I could have stretched out my hand and easily have caught one of them. I was fascinated by these friendly beings. One of them then spoke you have been recognised as a friend you will always be welcomed by the little people. We show our friendship in many ways, one was to get the fireflies to light you way as you left the heath last evening. We will in season show you where the ripest blackberries are to be found tell me what your favourite flower is and you will be seeing nearly every day fresh flowers of your choice. I without thinking said, “I love the daisies they have such sweet faces. A wave of her wand and a patch of the loveliest daisies that I have ever seen were growing in front of me. I thanked the Fairy for her kindness and the owl flew of up to its high perch. The Fairies went off to do their work of colouring all of the flowers and bushes, the grass and all that grew on the Heath at Dartford.
