The Disappearing Instrument
I have reserved today to be on the Heath at Dartford. Actually I have an appointment with to me a little known man. This man it was said had an instrument that could make things disappear. The instrument was for sale if the price was right. I knew that an instrument to make things disappear was not possible, I was curious as to what the man really had to offer. The day was warm and the fresh air would do me good. As I approached the clearing where the Old Oak Tree stood, I saw that the Fairies had something up their sleeves many were hiding behind bushes or trees, Fairies cannot stay put in one place without moving, If one looks closely one may easily spot them.
I sat myself under the branches of the old oak tree. The wise old owl hopped down and gave me the news of what had happened since my last visit. I in turn told her of the man I was to meet that wanted to sell me an instrument that could make things disappear. The wise old owl gave off what I presumed was a laugh. She then hopped up to the bough that she called her own. I knew of course that the wise old owl would keep and eye on what was going on under her favourite place.
The man somewhat strangely dressed came along the path that leads to the clearing. I got up from my root seat and welcomed him to the Heath at Dartford.
The strangely dressed man had a large sack over his shoulder, it must have been quite heavy for he walked a little lopsided, Bending his back he let the heavy sack fall slowly to the ground. Opening the sack he pulled out what looked like a coil of copper piping. Another thing with a row of switches he laid beside the copper coil from one of his pockets he took a flat battery that one finds in electric torches. The battery he placed inside of the boy the copper coil was attached to the box. Then he spoke. “See that tree over there I will now make it disappear.” He tripped some of the switches on the box and as I looked the tree disappeared.
The wise old owl hopped down from her perch and flew straight at the strangely dressed man. Not being used to birds and especially this attack from the wise old owl her ran off leaving his apparatus on the ground. The wise old owl came and with her beak she touched the same switches as the strangely dressed man had touched. From the copper coil came a spray of fine drops of water. The tree one could not see because of the fine spray. The whole thing was a trick to get money from me. The Wise Old Owl had seen from its perch that it was only the spray that stopped me from seeing the tree. It had not disappeared at all. Now all of the Fairies came to have a look at this strange machine that could make things disappear. They all had a good laugh at the wise old owls coming to my rescue and saving me from making a silly mistake by buying some rubbishy thing for my hard earned cash. This all happened only yesterday a full report from your scribbler Bern.
