Promises.

I learnt at a very early age not to make promises that I knew I could not keep. A promise is easily made but sometimes owing to unfavourable circumstances they are not possible to keep. One promise that went astray in all senses of the word was when I promised to look after a small dog. Its owners had to leave the country to live abroad. No pets were allowed and I stupidly gave my promise that I would look after it. Two days in my company and it ran off never to be seen again.

Never make a promise to a child, I remember my childhood I was promised many things, my disappointment when the promises were not kept, upset me no end. I never make promises to children; I do not want a child to be disappointed by my forgetfulness.

A Promise of Marriage is another promise that must be kept. Sometimes the circumstances can be drastic if this promise is broken. Many have regretted their actions and have had to pay heavily for this breach of promise.

What brought this on I can hear you asking. Simple really I promised my Wife that I would get up early and make breakfast for a change. I did not wake up in time and my wife made breakfast. She will not keep throwing this at me but I know that my guilty conscience will give me no peace until I make this promise good. I hope that my alarm works properly and wakes me in time. I will make a slap up feed for my beloved. Not the usual two slices of buttered toast but a full English Breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausages, Heinz Baked Beans and anything else I can think of. It all depends on my Alarm Clock. Have I wound the Alarm Clock, better make sure? Yes it is fully wound set it for six thirty. Hope it works as it should, or will I have to throw another clock away and buy a new one.

The Alarm went off and luckily I heard it and remembered my promise, I got out of my bed, quietly went down the stairs. The Kitchen showed my wife’s domain everything in its place all clean and waiting to be used. I even warmed up two plates for serving the breakfast and just to be on the safe side I toasted two slices of bread. I carefully laid the table, made the coffee just as my wife likes it and went up stairs to wake her and I hope surprise her with my remembering my promise albeit a day later than I promised. I was in my wife’s good book for today, I could not do anything wrong. So you see it pays to keep a promise once it is made. No one is disappointed, no one has bad feelings and you yourself can walk with your head held high. Bern
