I tasted fear that childhood morn
when most eyes fell to dream
and felt my heart begin to pound
and swallowed deep my scream.
My eyes breached wide with horror
as slashing pierced the night
a trembling boy pressed to the glass
observing such a sight.
The attic window far from view
from streetlights shadowed park
where devil's chores were carried out
and anguish drowned to dark.
A silver blade's firey shine
that split the veil of night
and took a whisper from the choir
that never woke to light.
He stumbled briefly fighting pain
then toppled from the stair
and eyes pressed high to attic's glow
I claimed his mortal glare.
Now trembling far beyond control
I slumped beneath the sill
and tried to shake my cousin's sleep
as tears began to spill.
Young eyes eased up into the light
this time in disbelief
and lifeless eyes still stared ahead
to feed the looming grief.
But, this time towering above
a silhouette displayed
the devil drenched in stolen blood
and robbed his victim paid.
I slumped again beneath the sill
and clenched my thumping heart
to try to wish away the scene
before the reruns start.
Now whimpering in silence
and lost to utter fear
I felt the sudden brush of hand
and screamed so all could hear.
My cousin hushed my desperate cry
and looked out in the night
where death was pressed in ominous view
as footsteps took to flight.
But, then the shrill of death's alarm
another sleepless dream
awakened by a new distress
and midnight's vacant scream.
And lights began to fill the court
as shouts defaced the moon
while sirens wails grew closer still
beneath the youngster's swoon.
And there he stood beneath the mob
the devil man in black
who took a life for penny change
then couldn't give it back.
Subdued by slumbers heroes play
to intercept his flight
alarmed by innocense of scream
that spilled into the night.
Now captured with a price to pay
becomes the sherrif's keep
and restless boys who tasted fear
have finally gone to sleep.
