Spent some time with a friend today
we try to catch up every now and then
spin our wheels and blow some smoke
makes us feel young again.
We mostly talk about things we know
the every day warriors we've become
and life is love and work all rolled up
and then some...
Today he talked about his boy...
and he tried to convince me he was tough
that watching his son give up on football
and joing the Army wasn't enough.
He told me he sent his son off to Alaska
to be stationed far away from here
and we all pray, far away from that other
somewhere, that we all seem to fear.
I raised a glass to Chris, Monday night
a drink and some time with Spike's son
knowing that it meant much to my friend
to mark every last hour with this one.
Now he's my son too...
just like the other soldiers who wear
my name as their burden, their cross,
ready to go, because they care.
Not, just because they have to,
but, because freedom breeds desire
and desire breathes the essence of life
into like minds, takes us higher.
I think I heard Spike cry today
he's not so tough afterall
but, his boy is a Soldier
serving with honor, filling the call.
Like all our Sons and Daughters
ready to go, ready to fight,
ready to stand in my place
today and tonight.
I talked to my good friend today
felt his burden for this one
and, I will never be more proud
Forever born to be my Son.
