Elsa's Thanksgiving

I knocked three times upon her door

so she'd know it was me;

I knew she often would forget,

and so I used my key.

She sat there at the table,

pictures all around;

"These are all my children,

they all live out of town."

"They're always busy holidays

and have to stay at home,

but their little ones are older now,

and I just b'lieve they'll come.

"So I made extra cookies,

got the best china down,

just in case the children

should make it into town."

Oh, Sweet Elsa, don't you know

they will never come?

For you lost both your children,

they're in their heavenly home.

The grandkids are all grown now

and all live far away;

they now have children of their own,

can't come on holidays.

"I made a special spice cake,

think I'll put the kettle on,

and get the cinnamon teabags

in case the children come."

Thanksgiving Day, and once again,

I'll bring her to my home,

but she will leave her door unlocked

"...in case the children come."
