Where I come from
people are laid back
and take life easy.
Unless, of course, you’re
a ya-ya girl
(found primarily
in the deep south.)
I grew up southern
never tried to drop the accent,
never wanted to.
It somehow fit in the
two-lane town
where I grew up.
I never was really bad,
(though bad is good these days)
just wanted to
liven things up a bit.
Let the truth be known;
we livened it,
my sisters and I.
Southern by birth,
ya-ya by choice;
we set out to conquer the town.
Momma lived on smelling salts
quite a bit during those years;
but she got over it.
The things she didn’t know
were the things she wouldn’t
have gotten over.
So we never told her.
But those days were good,
and we let go of them
kicking and screaming.
We flew freely, and
our wings served us well.
