SUNK
My vision blurred and I felt water on my face. Slowly my eyes closed and I drifted off... Suddenly, I found myself surrounded by friends and family, faces I'd thought were long forgotten. Each stare telling a story of a chapter in my life. Glares, tears and looks of regret. Some missing facial features... I among the masses.
A fountain with a reflecting pool, not far off, I decided to push my way through the bodies and make my way towards it. Approaching, it was evidently dilapidated. Cracks in the cement form were prominent and kudzu from nearby vines climbed through the water and up the central column.
Leaning over the edge of the pool, my gaze met my own reflection. My face was old and withered, a mere shadow of who I thought I was. Looking at my hands, they matched the reflection. Had so much time gone by? What had become of the years? I'd no recollection of the latter portion of my life.
My hands slipped on the smooth, wet marble and my footing came from beneath me. I found myself in the water, which was much deeper than what it appeared. It felt like slow motion and I could feel the piercing view of the audience. With my face slipping beneath the surface of the water, The image of those from my past gathering around the pool became my sight, their faces muddled by the water's motion and slowly fading away as I sank further into the depths. I closed my eyes, exhaled my remaining gasp, and inhaled deeply. My lungs rapidly filling and my strength waning, with no air to keep me afloat, I came to rest on the bottom.
Opening my eyes, I again found myself on the forest floor. Night had fallen and I knew not how long I'd been asleep.
