I stand in the forest
all alone.
Amidst the tangled overgrowth.
The sun doesn’t penetrate
through the dense foliage,
to light the darkness
within this realm.
Many do not brave
this dark hidden passage
into the center.
Dead twisted limbs
reach out to grab
what life is left in me.
Others just point
their crooked fingers
out of the woods
as if here too,
I do not belong.
Even the animals
have gone from this place,
no nourishment for body or soul
do they find.
But I
unlike the wildlife
enjoy the cool,
damp darkness of the place.
Where in the center,
no one dare tread.
There is peace
among the dark,
twisted, sinister shapes
within the confines
of the forest.
Maybe it’s that similarity
between this realm
and my soul,
that pleases me.
