My Grandma’s Brooch
If I had to describe my grandmother I would always start by describing her outfit: blazer, skirt and heels. She was a fancy elegant lady that could not get out of her house without lipstick on her lips. But what I was always curious about was all the brooches she had for her outfits. She never repeated or mis-matched any of them. I really can’t think of how many brooches she had. One day while we were eating cake, she noticed how amazed I was with the brooch of that day. She told me that she bought brooches when something special happened to her so using them were a reminder of how lucky she had been all these years. Those brooches gave her strength and a sweet sense of relief when things were not going out so well.
Some years later, her health was not the best. Each passing day was worse for her and I saw how the elegant lady was giving up step by step. One day she stopped wearing heels, one day the skirt, one day the lipstick and the worst day was when she stopped using her brooches. That’s when I truly realized how sick she was and lost she felt.
The last night she spent with us, she asked me to look for a brooch for her and put it on her pijamas. I felt relieved because I knew that even though what happened next, she would always remind her amazing life.
