I AM

I AM

I am the one whose ancestors’ survived the trail of tears so that your ancestors could do the Sundance.

I am the true blood, proudly red and black.

I am daughter, mother, sister, friend, yet I do not fit into your circle.

I longed and lived through many a cold winter with nothing but hides to wear and papooses to teach and care for.

I took the long journey and had my nation destroyed while yours still thrives yet I cannot dance in your sacred circle.

I loved but one to be winkta. My warrior spirit deep and strong yet you speak evil out of tongues of good.

My eyes are tearful amidst the full moon. It’s glowing over and around the cloud of darkness you try and shed over my tribe, my nation, my blood just because I am mixed blood.

Yet this lowly shaman forgives, journeys, travels on for I am daughter, mother, sister, friend and the most loved of my Creator.
