When the day was young and the sun was high in the midday sky
The trees swayed gently in the cool summer breeze,
The sun drenched fields, full of the most amazing colour,
As the old, beautifully crafted oak windows swung open,
My ears were filled with the sound of a child’s youth.
As the door bell rang again, once more I smiled and opened it politely,
Before me stood the grandest dress you had ever seen,
The room filled with pearls, ruby’s and diamonds of all shapes and sizes,
Gold, teal and the deepest of red, no two dresses were alike,
A feeling of being overwhelmed came over me for a second or two.
With the exception of this warm, fine summers eve.
Never again will I be allowed to walk among them,
I have not earnt my right to dine with them and say grace,
For to everyone within these walls all I shall ever be,
Is a mere maid, servant of the wealthy and popular.
As I stand in the ballroom surrounded by others yet feel so alone,
I can’t help but watch as he makes conversation, with grace and kindness,
Just for a second with all my heart I wish that he may look my way,
Surrounded by fake laughs, smiles and tears of joy, why I wonder,
Is it possible that these people cannot be themselves?
Then I spin on my heel and turn to make leave for the exit,
The good sir from before stands in my path and asks for a name,
As I whisper softly in his ear, my name; Lucy.
On that note I must depart for this is not my true place of heart,
All I ever dreamed of was to be here tonight.
The night is near an end, as I departed from this kind sir,
Who was so true, pure and the most gentle of princes,
I sit all alone in the beauty of the garden, wishing for it to come to an end,
As there’s a tap on my shoulder, a hand to hold, and a sweet voice,
Who helps me up and then asks me to dance.
The stars above me, as we dance in the pale moonlight,
A perfect dream, a perfect man, on a perfect night,
Everything I could wish for, as he stares into my eyes and kisses me
He whispers ever so quietly in my ear, I know who you are,
And why you walked away, what would you do if I asked you to stay?.
