THE WAR OF THE ELEMENTS
In the beginning of time, the Gods of Creation gathered to assign responsibilities over Earth. “I’ll take the Land”, said one God. “I’ll take the Waters”, said another one. “I’ll take the Skies”, said the third God. The fourth God appeared, late as usual, to the gathering of Creation. “What part of Earth should I rule?” asked the God optimistically. “Land is taken, Water is taken, and Skies are taken”. Angry and disappointed, the fourth God was forced to take the scraps, the Underground.
The God of Land, granted paws to all the fish and all the birds, so they could freely explore the mountains, plains, and fields. The God of Skies, granted wings to all the fish and mammals, so they could soar freely through the clouds. The God of Water, granted gills and fins to all the birds and mammals, so they could swim freely through the vast oceans, rivers and lakes. The lands, skies, and waters were a joyous and lively environment for all of the creatures, big or small. Not one God, however, granted any gifts to the creatures of the Underground. All these animals were trapped in filthy dirt. The Underground God, outraged by the indifference of his brothers, gathered the worst beasts he could find. Fowl critters, roaches and bugs were sent to bite, gnaw and scratch the rest of the animals.
“Who bit my beautiful wings?” exclaimed the blue jays.
“It was the sharks” whispered the Underground God.
“Who scratched my elegant fins?” complained the flounders.
“It was the bears” murmured the Underground God.
“Who bruised my tender skin?” cried the sheep.
“It was the eagles”, muttered the Underground God.
The animals complained to their respective Gods about the horrifying attacks, demanding them to take action. Thus began the first and greatest war of our era, the War of the Elements. And so, the God of Skies ripped away the wings from all animals that weren’t his. In retaliation, the God of Land cursed the other God’s animals from stepping a single foot on land. Finally, the God of Water took away all the fins and scales from the animals belonging to the Gods of Land and the Skies. Screaming and crying could be heard all throughout the world, it was a bloodbath. The Gods sent their creatures out against each other, and it has stayed this way ever since. Eagles snatch and murder mercilessly all sorts of rodents, bears claw and tear in half all the fish they stumble upon, sharks jump out of the ocean and devour entire seagulls with a single bite.
In the Underground, however, all of the gruesome beasts and insects were rejoicing and laughing wickedly. It is said that up to this day, their diabolical laughs and taunts can still be heard in the midst of a silent and dark night.
