Ever since I can remember its been a strict tradition of my grandfather´s to spend the whole Sunday morning with all of his grandkids. It a whole routine, he starts be picking each of us 6 grandkids at each of our houses (10am sharp) , after that he will park in the same spot, at the same movie theater, every single Sunday. He chooses any movie that´s around 11am and buys tickets in the very first row (which are obviously always available), and most of the times we are the only ones in the room. We all use to get popcorn, candy’s, drinks and we raced to the room right before the ads start. The thing is he always falls a sleeps, about 20 minutes into the movie, till the very end, a deep sleep, he snores and even talks in his sleep. The whole way back home we all discuss the movie and catch up on what ever was going on during the week, and anxiously wait for next weeks movies.
After many many years of the same routine over and over again, I finally understood what this tradition was all about. Its not my grandfather´s love for the movies, because most of the time he doesn’t even watch them nor the fact that he doesn’t have much to do on Sunday mornings, it’s the whole bonding experience, seeing all his grandchildren gathered together in one same place, talking and laughing, and just spending time with family. It’s the day of the week he is most exited about, the one he is exited about, its his happy moment of the whole week. When we were little kids we use to really look forward to this Sunday mornings, I could tell it was harder on him to control all of us running around and being sugar high, but with time , we got older, he got older and things started to change. We don’t go every single Sunday like we used to, because its harder with all of our schedules, well we hate getting up early, and well going to the movies is not as amusing as it was when we were all younger, but still this tradition remains, and me get together as often as we can, because we all know its important for my grandfather. Every time we go, he tells us a story of some movie we all saw together plus a wonderful memory that happened along with the movie, and its just impressive how he really remembers all this moments.
My grandfathers Sunday mornings
I can feel the happiness and joy on my grandfathers face every time we are all gather up together, like we are still 6 years old, and that’s a thing I will want to hold on and maybe even start this tradition with my own kids or granchildren.
