That Brown Notebook

My grandfather really loved mysteries. He was constantly surrounded by eccentric ideas and avant-garde philosophies. A modern “Sherlock Holmes”, carrying a little brown notebook containing more than a thousand word-problems. Kept always in his pocket and almost falling apart, the notebook unveiled solutions to the most intriguing situations as it reminded him that hidden truths are yet to be found. Filled with stories and memories, the chocolate-brown and incredibly worn out notebook served as an invitation to a world of new possibilities and endless entertainment. Through all types of family gatherings including the most unusual scenarios my grandfather’s notebook found its way to either document an interesting evening or provide a clue of the unknown. It made grown men relive their childhood as it gave us children a never-ending list of encounters. Always providing something thrilling to do, the crooked notebook encouraged the wackiest ideas and ignored all kinds of judgments. Business notes, grocery lists, quantum physics theories and even masonic conspiracy schemes, describe what one could meet in one of the pages on that old pad. What best can describe the notebook’s origin is the idea that facing adversity at a young age really leaves a bitter taste towards what we are unable to control. As one grows older and (supposedly) wiser we realize that what we are unable to reach just keeps expanding.   There is always more to know, something new to prove and adventures to happen.  Time should be made to acquire new tastes, to decipher challenging codes and to debunk ancient as well as millennial myths. I can’t remember the exact date of my first encounter with that brown relic, but I can surely recall I scribed my name on one of its pages the day I learned to spell it. The dull and stained notebook that looked older than the first typewriter could be found always next to a pen inside the right-side pocket of a great man. There was no need for any kind of approval or recognition, the leather notebook served as a way to cope with a challenging road and create consciousness that although we can’t understand everything that revolves around us, there are a bunch of mysteries we can indeed solve. It serves either an inspiration or consultation purpose depending on the date. It explains the desire of what some may call “madman” to explore the possibility of a better understanding of one’s nature. Always promoting the idea of an endless search for the answers that life and its secrecies have to offer.
