7. CONJUNCTION
and... but... or... while... because
A conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses, and indicates the relationship between the elements joined. Coordinating conjunctions connect grammatically equal elements: and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet. Subordinating conjunctions connect clauses that are not equal: because, although, while, since, etc. There are other types of conjunctions as well.
That is a lot of definition. JOINS WORDS: Everyone or no one. A blue shirt and a red skirt. PHRASES: easy to run and simple to build (This is a phrase and not a sentence because it has no subject). A sentence would read The lawnmower is easy to run and simple to build. Sentences MUST have a subject AND a verb. Otherwise, it is a phrase. i.e., She played. That is a sentence. She played hopscotch. (The predicate, hopscotch, makes the sentence more complete).

In poetry phrases are fine. It is still good to know that you are using one instead of a full sentence - because you are a wordsmith.
