Like gauntlets, they are run
through the maze of war with horses

and warrior combination strategies
designed to surprise and raise brows.

The opponents lean in forever
to ensure the queen and her
champions survive the sequence
unpredicted, yet the new positions
were anticipated long ago.
.
Castling would have been easier,
walking the Bishop to church,
or sharpening the lance secured
by the Knight's glove, but
the combination complicates

the field and hopefully

ensures victory.
