Inserting trademarking symbols is as simple as making a few keystrokes on your keyboard no matter what platform you may be using. The symbols ™ and ® are intellectual property symbols used to declare legal ownership of a brand name, logo, or tagline associated with the respective brand. Each one is used differently depending on which stage of the registration process the mark is undergoing.
In this article, you will learn how to insert trademarking symbols on different platforms.
When using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Outlook with AutoCorrect enabled, you can type the following to insert the symbols.
(tm) for trademark
(r) for registration
Microsoft Office has a function that allows you to insert many different symbols and special characters such as trademark symbols into any document.
Open Word or any Office application and select the Insert > Symbols > Symbol menu.
This will open the “Symbols” pop-up window.
You will find the trademark and registration symbols here.
If you can’t find it there, simply select the “Special Characters” tab and select it from there. Select the symbol and click “Insert” to add it to your document.
If your keyboard has a number pad, you can use alt code shortcuts to insert the trademark symbols onto your document. Press and hold the alt key and type the number code using your number pad to insert the symbols.

Microsoft has included in the release of Windows 10 an emoji keyboard where you can search for the trademark and registration symbol. Press the “Win + Dot” keys to open up the pop-up window and search or type to filter for the symbols to insert into your documents.
As a function of both Office 365 and iWork documents, you can press “Option +2” to insert trademark and “Option + R” to insert a registration symbol.
Similar to Windows Office 365, select Insert > Symbols > Advanced Symbols to add the trademark and registration symbols to your documents. Both can be found under the “Symbols” and “Special Characters” tabs.
If you’re familiar with the Windows Character Map app, the Character Viewer app of Mac is similar where you can find all the emojis and special characters. Press “Control + Command + Spacebar” to open the app and type in the search bar for the trademark and registration to filter it out and insert it in your document.
