My Mom’s Brownies

I do not remember when my mother became a DIY chef; all I can say is that I am really grateful that she did. Almost everyone in Tijuana knows my mother, or should I say, almost everyone in Tijuana knows my mother’s brownies. First my father, then my two brothers, after that some friends, and even my dog, they all one by one concluded that those tiny pieces of heaven where something more than just a simple dessert. I am going to quote a ghost because I am not really sure if someone has said this, but someone must have “And now the final and the most important ingredient, love.” Everyone knows this is true for the best tasting food around the world, but not everyone has this element in their cupboard; and I mean it you can really tell when someone has made their recipe with it. Birthdays, Mother’s day, Father’s day, Family parties, Christmas, Halloween, Easter, you name it, and yes, the brownies have been there too. They have something in it, I do not know what it is but when they are baked you can smell them from miles away, when you try them, the taste will last for hours, and when you give them to someone, they will be instantly happy. There were times when I compared what my mother did with art, because not everyone can do it. The more simple you see the process the more complex it will be to understand why you did not got them the same as her, and I say this because I have lived it, I have experienced it when my brothers and I needed some money. We turned to the family business and tried really hard to make them as they should be made, and do not misunderstand me, because with sweat, blood and practice I got several trays to be exquisite, it is just that we have never out skilled my mother, I am starting to think it might be impossible. It is funny how some people have shamelessly asked for the recipe, as if their last names were Ruiz Bernadac. Of one thing my family is sure, my great grandmother made them, my grandmother made them too, then my mother made them, know my brothers and I are learning to make them, and in the future my kids might make them too, and it is just going to keep that way, transcending trough the family.
