Once upon a time there was a little mouse called Lenny, Lenny lived with the other mice in Smontytown, a medium size mice village where they enjoyed the protection of one big surrounding sphere made of leaves and trees. This protection was because of the bats, who always flew around looking for some mice to catch. No one knew where the mice caught were taken. The mice council of Smontytown even made an arrangement with a group of dogs near from them and told them:
“Our friends dogs, we request you, please, if you can protect us from the bats that always take our youngens!”
“What will we have in change?” The dogs said.
“We can get you cheese!, cheese is wonderful”
“mmm… we don’t know about it, what if you help us with our flee problem”
“sure sure! We can control whatever you want, thanks friends”
“No prob’ fellas, this place is very comfy”
The dogs, then always guard that little sphere, making all the mice feel secure.
Lenny was curious about what happened to the mice taken and he asked to his father.
“Who are the bats, what do they do with us?, why do they kidnap us?”
“Lenny, bats are the ugliest creature in the world, they will pretend to like you, pretend to be kind, pretend to help you only because they want to suck as much of you as they can”
“Who told you that?”
“I’ve read it in the ancient roles your great grandpa gave to me”
“Let’s go to eat, it’s getting late and you know how we can’t mess around at night, the bats can still sneak from those dogs”
“But, I mean… no one has ever tried to talk with them?”
“Let’s go”
That night Lenny could not stop thinking in how the bats where, “how could the counsil hate them so much if they have not even talked to them?”. That idea did not leave him alone and he ended up sneaking out of his house and of the sphere. He tried to walk as quiet as possible, while he was trying to avoid the big legs of the sleeping dogs. He left the secure zone. “I shouldn’t be here… this is dangerous” he said to himself.
“I don’t see what is the danger in here” an echoie voice said.
Lenny swallowed a big chunk of breath; Tried no to shake; and he gathered all his guts to respond.
“I want to… see, want to know”
A giant bat landed right in front of him, throwing him backwards, it opened his wings in front of Lenny and stared with his red brilliant horrible eyes.
“This is not a place for you tiny rrrrrraaat”
“Who are you!, why do you want to take us?”
The big bat came very close to Lenny, and said.
“We take you guys to places never seen before, to show you what you miss from your boring stupid little sphere”
“What kind of places?”
“The biggest caves where perpetual parties are made…”
“What is a party?, What is a cave?”
“Not for you rrratty, this aint for pansies”
“Who are you calling pansie, I’m the bravest of Smontytown! I’m here!”
The bad flew, made a circle over him and said
“Let’s see what you are made of”
He grabbed Lenny, and took him to one cave. It was full of bats dancing and eating the forbidden berries.
They arrived and Lenny wanted to act like them and to mix with them. Of course everyone saw he was just a little mouse and they rejected him. Lenny tried hard to match, and he sort of could, but that night he ended alone anyway.
All confused, tired and rejected Lenny went back to Smontytown, but before he arrived the big bat came to him again and he told him
“that was nothing, you can be able to mix and match with us, to have fun like us, to live like us, but I wanted to test your strength”
“Screw you!, that was the worst night of my life!, here people care about me!”
Lenny entered back to Somtytown, sneaked back into his house and then he went to a town meeting announced by the council.
Everyone rejected Lenny his smell was from a bat, and Lenny felt the same way he did in the cave.
“Now im too bat for the mice and to mouse for the bat” he thought.
