I as a father cannot express...What it means to have a son
Nor as a father to a son...Never will I be one
But what I am about to say...God blessed me in a different way
He didn't give me fatherhood...Rather I'm blessed with motherhood
So close and yet so far apart...The words expressed are from my heart
And now I'd like to tribute pay...To you, Dear Dad, on Father's Day
For greatly have you influenced me...Not only through words but, from what I see
So as I express just what I feel...You'll know from my heart this love is real
Dear Dad, as a child I tended to be...The one who would so silently
Watch everything that you would do...The qualities are matched by few
For God is ever by your side...And through your faith he did provide
The answers to the struggles we meet...God carried you on his own feet
But we all know that something gained...Strength is built where once we pained
And further we are put to test...That we might reach our very best
For a harder worker there could not be...The desire to provide for your family
And second jobs you'd often take...To insure a better life to make
No matter how hard you worked at home...You had a tendency to roam
Often the help the less fortunate souls...I now understand your unselfish goals
For you are the type who without complaint...Would pitch right in as a Latter-Day Saint
To give your all and then some more...Yes, you are the type who never kept score
Yet, silently this child watched you...On through the years and years I grew
To learn the qualities you had...Your strengths and weaknesses, Dear Dad
For with patience you've been richly blessed...I often put it to the test
But seldom did I see it part...From that great big loving heart
You also have an inner-strength...And courage that marks any length
Honesty, Humility, and Compassion too...These are other qualities that I admire in you
For with your words of encouragement and hope...You pulled me from the end of my rope
You made me laugh with little trying...When deep with pain and often crying
Yes, I am the one who while growing up...Did often overflow your cup
With the choices that I made...How on your knees, the harder you prayed
And when my schooling came to and end...came marriage and children on which to spend
The special times of their childhood...In you stepped in Grandfather-hood
So now with a family that I must raise...I took a pen in hand to praise
You, Dear Dad, and all the rest...For GOD has given us each the best
And, when my son becomes a man...I hope to pass on all I can
For no prouder mother could I be...
Than to have my son... IN YOUR STEPS WALKS HE
