Inside Goojara - Inside is a unique blend of art, psychology, a raid, and a survival story, and it stars Willem Dafoe in his dream role. Dafoe's character, Nemo (Latin for "nobody" or "insignificant"), is the focus of much of the movie.
The Greek director Vasilis Katsoupis made his feature film debut with this film, which had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2023 and was distributed by Focus Features. Katsoupis, with the help of screenwriter Ben Hopkins, takes a risk and produces a compelling drama about an art thief confined to a cage: a lavish New York City flat that could pass for an art gallery. Nemo and his crew are searching the flat for the grand prize, a self-portrait by Egon Schiele worth $3 million.
After getting locked in due to a technical glitch, Nemo finds himself in a life-or-death situation. His friends have betrayed him, and now he's trapped. He, of course, freaks out and tries everything. He slams doors, yells for assistance, and checks the surveillance footage to see if anyone is around. It's impossible to get the attention of the cleaning staff or security guard who occasionally passes through. As the days and months pass, Nemo is left to rely on his own resourcefulness.
Nemo's flat becomes a safe haven where he can reflect on the art and surreal circumstances surrounding him and learn the truth about what he needs to survive. His desperation causes him to take actions that slowly turn this beautiful place into a wasteland. It's like being trapped on an opulent, but isolated, island. Because of his own determination to stay alive, he builds a tower out of furniture that eventually becomes a masterpiece. Or maybe it's the path to independence. The success of "Inside" can be attributed to the way in which various parts seem to carry on a conversation with one another. The flat is tasteful and spare, and Frederik Van de Moortel's score is as light and deliberate as the setting. Nemo can watch CCTV surveillance channels on a massive flat-screen TV, and they reflect the artworks. Nemo's one-sided relationship with the staff he watches through the CCTV footage deepens over time (as evidenced by his beard growth and changes in the weather, for example). These people live in close proximity to him, but he can't see them because of the thick walls and security systems.
Katsoupis successfully transformed a foreboding premise into a suspenseful psychological thriller about survival and an art film about the significance of art in our lives. All in all, it was a great show because of this. Critical to the film's success is the work of production designer Thorsten Sabel and art curator Leonardo Bigazzi, much of which was commissioned especially for the film.
