I hurt him
wanted to
but now
I needed to soothe
to let the shelter of my arms
bring him comfort
whispering opiate words
to calm us both
echoed by kisses
upon his eyes, teary
upon his forehead
damp and warm
upon his cheeks
still burning so softly
and upon – into
his mouth
held open with gasps
of an air so newly breathed
He trembled
this novitiate fawn
this nascent faun
who had taken his first steps
away from the care of the herd
only to caught
and held tightly to my chest
his legs entangled with mine
yet he soon stilled beneath my hands
as gasps became the even sound of slumber
and this moment captured me
knowing that I would hold on forever
