Do not call me father.

Do not call me father.

For I do not share my thoughts of love with you.

I might think them, I might feel them,

but the miles that lay between you and I-

the words of love lose their power,

their prestige - their meaning.

Do not call me father.

But what is a father? Someone

who protects you when you are hurt.

Encourages you when you fail.

The one who reassures you everything will be

okay when your world comes tumbling down.

Do not me father!

Why? Because years go by and we

do not take part in the same meal

or sleep under the same roof

or breathe the same country air.

Do not call me father!

Because that name is chosen

by someone else - kin who is

not of my blood claims that name.

Do not call me father!

Because that role lies in the

heart and the soul of your mother.

Author's Notes/Comments:

I dedicate this poem to my son, Needam Bryce Sommer. This is my reassurance that I will always be by your side not matter what will come. I love you!
