What about me?

What about this, what about that, what about him, what about there? Adam questioned himself about everything, and sometimes too much. He was an anxious person worrying about everything. Adam bought a dog on December, he missed having a dog since the last one he had escaped. Now Adam wouldn’t let that happen again. He bought a sweater for the small dog and cuddled the cold out of him. The dog was still distant from Adam; it still felt out of place. After watching a movie together Adam decided to call his new dog Toto.

A week passed and Adam took Toto out for a walk. He hold on tight to his dog whenever another dog or car passed by. Adam was pretty nervous since he didn’t know much of Toto, he just knew he was already one year old and was a dog from the street.

“Hey pick up that poop from your dog” A stranger yelled

Adam took some time to react, he was lost in his running thoughts “Yeah” he replied without intent. The stranger stormed off and disappeared in the corner of the block.

Adam didn’t have any trash bag to pick it up, he just kicked it around the pavement until it reached a patch of soil where there was a tree. “Thankfully it was hard Toto,” he said to the dog as it wigged its tail. After that incident they both just went home. As Toto was trying to sleep, Adam was bothering him, calling him silly names in a brainless tone. He was really excited to have Toto by his side.

Years passed and Adam was not happy, he couldn’t even smile at his birthday with his favorite double vanilla cake with extra icing in front of him. He hasn’t ever felt that sad and the worst part is that he couldn’t find what was making him so dispirited. Every day passed like a falling leaf in autumn, discolored and without roots. He thought that 18 year olds didn’t cry anymore, that they were already men. One night Adam grew tired of sadly hugging the couch all day. He went out to walk with Toto. As they were walking Adam thought that he had nothing to lose, so he took the leash off Toto. The little dog went storming off and disappeared in seconds. Adam chased him as fast as he could, he was already panting, scared and feeling sorry for himself. As he got to the corner he saw Toto on three legs peeing on the wheel of a car, with his tail and ears up.  Adam decided that he will give that night to Toto, wherever he went Adam will chase him.  After chasing him for a while he realized that he was not the one chasing, it was Toto.  He couldn’t stop smiling, he couldn’t believe it, he picked up his partner and hugged him there, in the middle of the street, he closed his eyes. In the darkness he realized that it wasn’t Toto, his poop or the birthday cake, it was something else, something beyond him, something he couldn’t control. Darkness suddenly became a warm red, he heard a honk, he remembered he was in the middle of the street.
