An Oriental Oath

In times of upmost misery

I will mask my face in tranquility

Fight my demons as they come

Serving as an army of one.

If I ever feel the slightest harm

I will never show any hint of alarm

So that the world may never know

The painful memories etched upon my soul.

To my husband I will be obedient

Being his perfect wife to the last ingredient

I will only want to bring his approval to a pedigree

In his pleasure I will find my revelry.

Being born lower and with such a weakness

In my life I can expect no happiness

But I swear to be as perfect a woman I can be

In order to be accepted by my society.

"Staying alive is an act of resistance and courage both selfless and sublime."

Amelie Nothomb

Fear and Trembling
