I do not know why he felt thus compelled
to build a manor house so far away
(an island rather paltry not as large
as I thought); and set upon a promontory
with Roman furnishings and a third storey;
protected from thrusts of some enemy
by height and slope, and the surrounding sea.
Beneath it, on the shore, warehouse and quay
will well accommodate both ship and barge
exchanging local tin to Roman forges
near Ostia, where master craftsmen weld
it into shields and helmets for the legions
stationed throughout the provinces and regions
gathered into the Roman Empire's sway.
Look at that vista; what a view; how gorgeous!
But will his wife or child appreciate
this place?---oh, one can only speculate.
