Artifact 2026-0812-B

   

The man sits alone on a park bench at the corner of Via Della Luce. He pretends to be reading the latest issue of Panorama but really he's scanning the busy street for the courier who wears a blue peacoat. A stray gray cat twines ardently around his legs. "Sì sei un bel micio... now scram, I have to work." he gently scoots the feline with his foot. The courier appears, casually meets a gent in a wrinkled raincoat. They shake hands, leaning in slightly, then each goes their separate way. That's all he knows. That's all he's supposed to know.

 

"The bread is ready to bake" - the words the courier whispered in passing while passing him the newspaper. He waits to get home before retrieving it from his sleeve. He riffles past articles about ancient DNA found in Siberia, a statue of a human riding a leopard found in Turkey, grainy photos of silver coins from every corner of the globe, a Viking stash in Finland, an Etruscan tomb built to a blue genie, a Mayan tomb built to a raingod, a Celtic tomb built in Germany, mummies here, mummies there, mummies mummies everywhere. Posted at the back of the rag, in the Lost & Found section, sandwiched between blurbs for a found lost olivewood drinking vessel red wine stains and a lost map of Atlantis that had briefly been found then lost again, was this:
