Love too late

Folder:
Grief

She met him online,
he seemed different somehow,
and she started to care again.

Talking late at night,
letting the truth come out,
letting her guard down at last.

With him, the walls,
the barriers she’d built so carefully,
they never came up,
never shut him out.

What made him different,
what made her open her heart,
she never knew.

Conversations on the phone,
his voice lingered in her dreams.

For him, no lies would come,
with him, she was free.

He saw the side of her,
the face beneath the mask,
few were allowed to see.

She never realized how much he meant,
till the day she got the call.

An accident, she was told,
barely listening, her body felt frozen.

They were supposed to meet,
he was going to teach her,
show her how to truly smile.

Longing to hear his voice again,
she can’t cry anymore.

Those walls, once weakened,
now seem to cage her once again.

She clings to his laugh,
all the memories she has left.

Running into the night,
she seeks refuge from her demons.

Suddenly, he’s there,
holding her firmly,
letting her fall.

Stroking her hair,
he lets her breakdown.

Finally, she looks up,
into his eyes, but too late,
he disappears with the wind.

A whisper passes her ear,
the breeze kisses her cheek.

Silent tears fall from her eyes,
as she replies softly,
“I love you too.”
