Ten day's darkness chilled the land.
The men were slow as dead and damned.
Wagon broken, river flooded,
Their face and bodies always mudded,
Two men bared to live the day.
"Within my heart is something dark;
Something you deserve to know.
It's wretched, waring with my soul.
I'm burdened with decisions tole.
I would sell my soul to stay free
Of it for just one day.
If only it weren't so compelling
With its voice so loudly yelling-
Maybe I could get away."
"Like a brother you were in the days of old
You held me at night when my blood ran cold.
And ours was the trust great as can be, you said,
When you told me the truth of the lies you had spread.
And when we murdered that man for this stead
You laughed we were closer than he was to dead.
I've been with you every step of the way
And we've never let secrets come to stay,
So tell me my friend, I beg and plea,
What it is you wish to tell me!"
"I hate you like the stars hate day,
taking the sight of their light away.
Yes, indeed, you were my friend
But now to hell your soul I send!"
The look of horror upon his face
Showed how fast his heart did race.
There was no scream or panick'd run;
He sat there shaking, dead in stun.
The knife came down without a sound.
He died without a grave or mound.
* * *
And so now with his job all done
He'll move on 'til his next fit come.
Some would say he died a bit;
He walked away without regret.
