Before I lay my head to sleep,
I stop a second,
To listen to you breathe.
Soaking it in,
I watch--
Your eyes closed,
Ever so gently,
Arms flopped to the side.
Your gentle snores slowly grow louder,
As I try to imagine you not by my side--
I cannot fathom a world without you.
So hard is it for me to sleep,
Knowing you will soon leave me.
I lay here,
Looking at you,
Making a silent list.
So much preparation is needed,
And precautions must be made--
In case you fail to return.
Did we know when we married,
What our future would hold?
We believed we knew it all,
But we did not.
Such is the life of a military wife.
