An offbeat holiday in Malaysia

An offbeat holiday in Malaysia

Malaysia is one such country, which boasts of some of the best skylines dominated by one of the world’s tallest twin towers. The whole of Malaysia itself is a major tourist hub with some of the most beautiful attractions like Aquaria KLCC, Merdeka Square, Batu Caves, Istana Budaya, Thean Hou Temple and a dozen museums, parks and shopping centres.

Enter via Singapore: Cross the border easily by boarding a bus from Singapore and getting off at Johor Bahru. There are several express buses that ply on this route and you can buy tickets online from www.redbus.my as well. It is one of the most popular cities in the southern peninsular of Malaysia. It is located just across the causeway from Singapore. It is not just one of the most revered tourist destinations but is also considered to be an important regional transport and manufacturing hub. It is considered one of the most rapidly growing cities with a population of more than 1.8 million people. One thing that I noticed was that since the city has a large land space it is not as dense as the other cities around Malaysia.

Melaka to Kuala Lumpur: Hit the capital next. Set shop for a day in Chinatown that will get you cheap accommodation and food. A trip to the Reggae bar here is necessary.

Penang: Penang is the cultural hotspot in Malaysia! You’ll fall in love with it’s busy streets, beautiful artwork, and enchanting history. Oh, and the food is amazing. Most people come to Penang only planning a few day stay, but end up staying much longer than they expected. You can spend a day on Batu Ferringi beach, hike through the National Park, and take the journey up to Penang Hill for spectacular views of the entire city.

Kuala Lumpur to Kota Bharu to Perhentian Island: From KL, board a bus to Kota Bharu, where you can stay for another day exploring the city before heading off to Perhentian Island to cap off the journey.

Johor Bahru to Melaka: Without spending much time at Johor Bahru, head to Melaka to spend a day there. Explore the historic city on its extremely colourful yellow-blue trishaws. The street performances on Jonker Street will be memories that will stay with you forever. Melaka is one such city, which boasts about good food apart from its never-ending list of cultural attractions. The city caters to all kinds of travellers at all times of the day. The Nyonya Cuisine is quite famous here and has been revered since ancient times.

Langkawi: Officially known as Langkawi the Jewel of Kedah, Langkawi is an archipelago of 104 islands in the Andaman Sea, around 30 km off the mainland coast of north-western Malaysia. It’s right at the border of Thailand, and is a popular place to visit for traveller’s going north/south between Malaysia and Thailand. It is truly an amazing island with amazing things to do, cheap accommodations, tax-free booze, and beautiful landscape.
