As the Marine handed her the folded flag
She recalled the last words he said to her
“Don’t worry Mom, I am certainly no hero,”
Hugging his mom as he told her a last farewell
The day he left for the rice fields of Vietnam.
True to his word he was vigilant day and night
In avoiding danger at every turn until that day,
The sound of the grenade launcher resounding
Every one stationary in time, frozen with fear
His dying act a heroic self-sacrifice for others.
