AFTER THE BATTLE

Not a sound was heard after the ferocious battle

Save the sobbing of a Vietnamese child-warrior

His death sounds from afar breaking the silence,

The guns deadly silent cooling from rapid fire

Scared young boys peering through tall grasses

Fear permeating their position in the hot jungle

Beads of sweat mingling with frightened tears

Commingled emotions sweeping the platoon

The moon surrendering its light to black clouds

A pall covering the stillness of the battlefield

Like ebony skies before an impending storm.
