Slave girls---all of them tatooed, pierced, hair dyed
unusual colors: our centurion
said that each of them should be crucified
(of course, face downward). Several of them cried;
but then, some of them prayed and called to Christ
(we stood about, waiting to have some fun).
For slaves like them---they said---He sacrificed
His life (I have no faith, I do not know).
But then, just as some clouds revealed the sun,
the Prefect's orders came to us---to cease
this execution at once and release
them, who would be set free if they would go
(transported on a luxury ship, next tide)
to meet some bookish scholars . . . at Bordeaux.
Each one agreed, and each one said this same
statement---that, from henceforth, her own name
would have the appellation, Crucified.
