+ 9TH POEMS: A Glimpse Of Jacob Leaning On His Staff [Hebrews 11:21]

"Here in Egypt, in my son Joseph's very capable care,

"I lean on this sturdy staff as I lean on my eager prayer,

"though I am far from the Terebinth of Mamre, where my grandfather,

"Abraham, worshipped the God who later named me Israel.

"Worship, even in comfortable exile, can be difficult, I have learned and tell.

"But to those who mutter under their breath, asking, 'Why bother?'---

"I answer that God Who constellated the sky with stars

"is worthy of worship and praise that can be offered anywhere:

"in Egypt of many monuments, or Hebron, or shackled or behind bars.

"He always hears---and never fails to hear---any believer's prayer.

"Hurry---fetch a lamb from the sheepfold, or an ox from the stable.

"I shall worship according to the Liturgy of our blessed ancestor, Abel."

Author's Notes/Comments:

My medical disability prevents me from attending the Divine Liturgy in person.  This is particularly distressing, but the metaphor of Jacob (himself lame) worshipping in exile helps.
