To A Woman In A Cabin In Hardin County, Kentucky

You are considered, even relegated, to the

crowd of the impoverished, likely illiterate; their ranks,

beneath consideration of the genteel plutocracy

that denies its attention and enclosed society

to such as you.  Since the seventeenth century,

it has been so; and no one suggests it is discourtesy.

Now you are about to begin the travail of the delivery

of the baby in your womb, during this frigid February:

He will be an important man, indeed among the most extraordinary

of heroes recognized and celebrated by secular History;

yes, one of the land's inimitable Greats---

because he will lead the restoration of a unified America,

the reunion, in blessed permanence, of the United States.

From your flesh he will come, you, Tom Lincoln's spouse, Nancy Hanks.

Author's Notes/Comments:

Even though the lines and format are not imitative of the poems of the great Walt Whitman, I believe he was, nevertheless, present behind the poem as I assembled it.
