Sometimes it just takes a simple sent or the taste of a flavor for people to transport themselves to a nostalgic era, well this happens to me at least once per year. Let me tell you all about it, everyone in our family looks forward for the holiday season to come. Of course you could think that everybody does the same, but there is a special reason why we do so. Once a year my grandmother prepares the most delicious and exquisite cookies you could ever imagine. It has become a sort of family tradition, that a weak before Christmas all of her grandkids visit and help her cook these amazing cookies. The little kids like to play with the dough; they make all kinds of figures and even throw some to each other, hoping that grandma doesn’t catch them. The older ones, well, we just like to eat the freshly baked goodies before someone figures out that we do so, because obviously no one is allowed to eat them before Christmas. At the end we don’t provide that much of a help, on the contrary I guess that my grandmother has to make more because of us, but oh boy! We sure have fun and fuel up our tummies. I’m telling you, these cookies are like gold; for the past years they even started making a raffle! My uncles, aunts and parents fight to see who gets the bigger share. Who ever wins the big tray of cookies has to quickly hide it so that they don’t star to disappear (if you know what I mean). You might wonder, why wait the whole year if we all know the recipe? Believe me we have all tried to follow the instructions, buy the same ingredients and everything, but still we can never make them the way my grandmother does. If you pare them up with coffee or milk it’s the best combination you could possibly taste, they are delightful, like having a piece of her love in every bite, they are just great. Yet, I have come to realize that the actual cookies are not what makes everything so special, but the time we get to spend together in the holidays, from the beginning of the preparation to sharing the very last cookie, its what really makes us so eager for the holidays it to come.
