I take a deep breath, like a small child
as he prepares to dive for pennies at the pool bottom.
My pool bottom has no pennies,
Just blank, white ground.
He's got his swim trunks on,
and a dive mask.
I have a different sort of mask on.
Both of out masks are alike though.
They don't fit quite right,
keep falling off.
His friends cheer him on
from the sides of the pool.
I sink to the bottom;
there's not even a lifeguard on duty at my pool.
I'm not swimming, I'm drowning.
