Alarm clock goes off, wife comes in and makes sure I am awake.
So I get up and get something to eat.
My little man, just turned eight, runs in.
playing cops and robbers with his little sis.
A five in a half year old with curly blonde hair.
She looks every bit like her mother.
I look at my wife and she smiles back.
My whole world right here in front of me.
Getting ready for work, heading out on the road soon.
Saying a prayer silently, knowing deep down someones watching over me.
Tell my wife and kids I love them as I head out the door.
On the the way to work everything on my mind.
Car ain't running right, bills needing paid, and house repairs needing made.
Wondering how I am going to get it all done.
At work I check to see if there are any pass downs.
Lot of paperwork I need to get caught up on.
Already had about a dozen calls, one hour left and I am heading home.
Dispatch calls out over the radio “Physical domestic in progress.”
I run out to the car, hit the lights and sirens.
Dispatch still on the phone with the reporting party,
saying the husband is intoxicated, possibly suicidal,
they are attempting to get further information.
They key up on the radio for a second,
I can hear the screaming from the caller in the background.
Reporting party says there is a child in the residence.
Then dispatch calls out again “male subject has a weapon.”
Dispatch states there was a loud noise then the line disconnected.
They are trying to make contact back, but are unable.
Dispatch states they have EMS and Fire Rescue staging in the area.
In a matter of seconds the other units and I will be on scene
but it seems like its taking forever.
As we arrive on scene, outside everything is quiet.
My heart is racing and I am trying to stay as calm as I can.
Entering the residence the male subject is sitting in his recliner.
Gun in one hand, bottle of alcohol in the other.
He wont speak to us just keeps looking down at the gun.
Then he lays it on the ground and we cuff him up.
We begin to check the rest of the house.
Back bedroom door has a big hole in it, as we open it there stands the caller.
She is holding on to her six year old son, trying to guard him, then she sees its us.
She has a black eye, bruises and some cuts.
The little boy also has similar marks.
Dispatch calls over the radio for status check.
We tell them its secure have EMS and Fire Rescue respond in.
One of the other deputies takes the male to county jail.
I go off duty and head home.
Only thing I can think of is what waiting on me.
Pull into the driveway, and just sit there in my car.
Saying another prayer this time for my fellow officers.
Wife is reading a book, children are already in bed.
I tell my wife I love her and give her a kiss.
Then I go wake up the kids, telling them that I am home.
I wrap my arms around them.
Holding them until they fall asleep in my arms.
Closing my eyes I pray, a thank you for everything...then an amen.
