Quiet house

Folder:
book 13

On a quiet side lot

     without any lights

there sits a house

     the people passed by

a blanket of snow

     unbroken by small feet

no games there are played

     and laughter is not heard

frost glistens brightly

     on the ill kept lawn

no lights here glitter

     amid all the Christmas cheer

icicles do hang down there

     from the barren eve's

cold frost does lie upon

     the darkened window panes

carolers pass on by it

it's walks not cleared of snow

and it lies so darkly

as if no one is home

within its quiet parlor

     the Christmas tree does stand

decorated so carefully

     with ornaments oh so old

a white cloth lies beneath it

as barren as the snow without

waiting there for presents

     that are generally gone without

hope there still does linger

     for a Christmas morn

but a fear is found there

     for another barren Christmas morn
